Hazmat Operations: First Responder Operations Course

The basic 24-hour course complies with 29 CFR 1910.120 (q)(6)(ii). With the addition of the 8-hour hands on skills module, it complies with NFPA 470 Chapter 6, Competencies for Hazardous Materials/WMD Operations Level Responders and Chapter 7, Professional Qualifications for Hazardous Materials Operations Level Responders in addition to 29 CFR 1910.120 (q)(6)(ii).

Who is this course for?
This course is designed for individuals who respond to releases or potential releases of hazardous substances as part of the initial response to the site for the purpose of protecting nearby persons, property, or the environment from the effects of the release. They are trained to respond in a defensive fashion without actually trying to stop the release. Their function is to contain the release from a safe distance, keep it from spreading, and prevent exposures.

What Training will you recieve in this course?
The basic course consists of a 24-hour lecture. If requested, an 8-hour hands-on skills practice for IFSAC/Pro Board testing can be added (32 hours total). In addition to the 32-hour course, an additional 8 hours of Mission Specific Competencies may be added (40 hours total), utilizing the requestors equipment, to include use of chemical protective clothing (CPC), use of basic atmospheric monitoring equipment, and supporting technical decontamination operations.
What will you get out of this course?
This course will train participants to have knowledge of the basic hazard and risk assessment techniques, to know how to select and use proper personal protective equipment provided to the first responder operational level, to understanding of basic hazardous materials terms, to know how to perform basic control, containment and/or confinement operations within the capabilities of the resources and personal protective equipment available with their unit, to know how to implement basic decontamination procedures, and to have an understanding of the relevant standard operating procedures and termination procedures. This course can be customized to meet the customer’s specific training needs.
